It's weird looking at this photo as it was one of the last photos I took in London, and now I'm at the airport counting down to the 18-hour flight that will take me back to where I spent 12 years of my life. October was the perfect ending to my two-year London chapter. Well, other than the first week when I had phenomena the cough from hell. Jayeand I spent an insane amount of time together, determined to make the best of being in the same time zone; I've also had a massive clearout of my wardrobe and makeup, leaving only the gems packed in boxes for the continental move.
I've fallen back in love with the Trilogy Rosehip Oil (£26.50) the past month and am glad to say that I've marked the end of my London chapter the same time I finished this oil. I mix this in with my summer moisturiser - the La Roche Posay Effaclar - and not only does it provide enough moisturisation for the gradually drying weather, it also calms my skin and prevents moving-stress-induced breakouts.
My skin has been looking a lot better, especially in photos. While I can credit some of it to my skin not freaking out every other day, I'd say the Bourjois Java Rice Powder(£9.99)is the real hero here. Initially only used for setting my under eye area, I got lazy one day and decided to use it all over my face. That's when the 'OHMYGOSHYOURSKIN' comments started coming in. It's a brightening powder that instantly adds a soft halo-like radiance boost. I mean, who doesn't like that? The design of the packaging makes this one loose powder that I'm willing to travel with and repurchase again and again.
I dedicated a whole post about the Catrice Eyebrow Set and L'Oreal Brow Artist Plumper (£5.99) combo. In a nutshell, when the ashy-toned powder and the best tinted brow gel on the market come together, it's only natural that you get beautiful defined but natural brows. Plus, both offers are friendly on the purse and wouldn't result in instant noodles for the rest of the week when purchased.
Most of my makeup has been kept quite simple but it doesn't mean that I haven't been getting fun with it. October was the month when I faced the music and counted just how many lipsticks I own. Too many, if you're wondering. It's also the month where I've been buying lipsticks like I have all the money in the world. Hey - admitting is only the first step. It doesn't mean I'm ready to deal with my problem yet. I've fallen head over heels, to hell and back again for MAC Flat Out Fabulous(£15.50). I never knew I needed a bright pinky-purple lipstick until the day I swatched this and well, the rest is history. I even dedicated a whole post to this lipstick, that's how hard I've fallen for this unique shade.
Another bold shade that's been adding some drama into my looks is MAC All Fired Up(£15.50). A pinky-red shade, this is one that I know will never fail me no matter how bad/yucky I feel. It's a retro matte finish, meaning that it will stay put on the lips even if a tad bit drying. It's a shade that wears well in all seasons, and even though a bright shade, it's just muted enough for it to be wearable during the day.
There are days when I prefer a more neutral shade. That's where the Maybelline Velvet Beige(£6.99) comes in. As the name suggests, it's a beigey shade, but there's just enough pink and brown in there to make it wearable. This isn't as long lasting as the previous two offerings, meaning that it's a lot more forgiving on the lips. The formula of the Maybelline Color Sensational Lipsticks are extraordinary, and I would easily say that they're probably one of the best on the market - no matter what price point.
Last but not least, how could I not mention Jaye's Style Diary? No, it's not because of my extraordinary filming skills. Well, not just. Jaye has impeccable style, the perfect balance of girly, casual, and cool. And her legs, oh her legs. They just go on forever and she really knows how to dress up that point. Her editing skills is the cherry on top to it all and basically, what I'm trying to say is, go watch the video if you haven't already.
Okay, that's it folks. My plane is calling for boarding and I'm signing off now. What have you been loving the past month?
My hair is stubborn. It's naturally wavy and refuses to straighten without loads of hard work. But once you finally dedicate time and effort to straighten it, it'll stubbornly stay (relatively) straight. It's also stubbornly frizzy and refuses to be tamed. Unfortunately, this is a battle that I'm still strategically figuring out how to win. I mean, methods other than popping on a hat and pretending all is fine with the world. So uh, yeah, that's why hair products are rarely mentioned. But I'm itching to do something different today so let's talk hair.
I'm quite picky with my shampoo while not being that picky at the same time. Like, I stick to getting the range that's on sale from the brands I know. Does that make sense?Anyway, I've been feeling adventurous lately and strayed from my usual picks. I was quite surprised at how much I enjoyed the Maple Holistics Sage Shampoo*. It's marketed for people with dandruff, but I personally quite like it as it almost acts like a clarifying shampoo without being stripping.
The Maple Holistics Silk18 Conditioner* is a nice alternative to my usual heavy hair conditioners. I was skeptic about this at first as it is quite light and I wasn't sure it was going to pack enough punch to deal with my stubborn hair. But this works as well as, if not better than my usual conditioners as it's easier to wash out while being equally moisturising.
I still drench my hair with the John Frieda Leave-In Conditioner(£5.89) even after leaving my normal conditioner in for 3-5 minutes in the shower. Simply because it makes my hair extra soft while preventing it from tangling when I sleep.
I'm quite low maintenance with hair styling. Meaning that I'll maybe curl some bits of my hair if it's looking particularly fluffy, but nothing fancy. The Redken Rough Paste 12(£16.30) mixed in with a dallop of the Bumble and Bumble Brilliantine(£20.50) is the perfect styling combination. The former adds some grip and defining texture to my hair while the latter gives you that tousled look but adding some shine. I have a whole review on the Brilliantine here and the shine that it gives is glaringly obvious in the before and after photos.
My hair is peculiarly stubborn, so I'm sure these products will work on normal hair if they already perform wonder mine. I mean, I'd probably tone it down a notch and not spray half a bottle of the leave-in conditioner in one go, but these are all star products that I would recommend to anyone looking for something new. What are the hair products you've been enjoying lately?
"Oooh look at all the pretty photos. How did they get the lighting like that?"
"Uh huh. Uh huh. OH HAY- lipstick."
"This person has terrific taste."
"Where's the next page button? *pause* OH. I am an idiot."
"How many pages can I go back before I start being too creepy?"
"Well, they never post. I guess it's not that stalkery I'm already on page 15." or "Nah, they post everyday. It's only natural I'm already on the tenth page."
"WHY DOES EVERYONE KNOW HOW TO ACCESSORISE THEIR PHOTOS???"
"....what am I doing wrong? Someone tell me how to take proper photos????"
"Can I have their lipstick collection/closet????"
"....wait. What is this person's name?"
"Where's the 'About Me' page? Why isn't there some form of FAQ???? WHY DON'T I KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT THIS PERSON????"
"....they're how old????"
"I'm too old."
"I wonder what it would be like to go shopping with th- oh, I need that lipstick. Like yesterday."
"How do they pay for all this stuff????"
"HOW DO I PAY FOR MY UNNECESSARY MAKEUP????"
"....I'm sorry, bank account."
"THAT SCARF THO. It reminds me I want a coffee."
"I should also bake some banana bread to go with my coffee."
"Seriously. I love this person's writing. So witty. The puns. Appreciate the puns."
"Why aren't there swatch photos???? Show me the swatch photos????"
"People need to do more swatch photos."
"Reminds me that I need to do swatch photos. Ugh. So much effort though. That's why people don't do swatch photos, Daphne."
"But I like swatch photos. People need to do more swatch photos."
*stalks all their social media accounts*
"Seriously though, how have I not found this person's blog before????"
"They need an about me page still."

Conclusion: an 'About Me' page to prove that you're not a extremely high functioning robot.
I've been guilty in er, overindulging in products I don't need and can't afford the past couple months. I thought it would be a nice change to pull myself away from the gravity force of the beauty counters and have a nice stroll down the drugstore aisles. Am I going to be buying products I don't need? Probably. But at least it'll be less of a dent in my bank account. Or so I tell myself. Seriously though, I've come across some pretty good affordable makeup products after being uninspired by the drugstore for some time now.
I am a foundation snob that believes in the higher price tag when it comes to base products. But the L'Oreal Infallible 24H-Matte Foundation(£7.99) has reminded me that you can get good bases without living off of instant noodles for the rest of the month. It's obviously, a matte finish and wears really well throughout the day. It's a medium, tottering on the edge of full coverage foundation that feels light on the skin. There is no obvious scent to it and I appreciate that it comes in a squeezy tube rather than a bottle as I tend to be quite clumsy with my makeup at times.
I raved about this at the start of the year but I'm still loving the Seventeen Stay Time Concealer(£4.49). It's not often a liquid concealer can live up to the full coverage claim, even rarer in the drugstore. However, the offering from Seventeen has won against all odds and delivered the full coverage claim. Plus, it's a seriously liquidy texture - not goopy liquidy, but liquidy liquidy. Make sense? I've come to the end of mine, but I'm picking up a backup to bring back to Taiwan as this stuff is just. that. good.
Of course there was going to be a lipstick in the roundup post. The Maybelline Color Sensational Lipsticks(£6.99) have gotten a lot of hype but I've never found a shade and finish that I've liked as a lot of the colours I liked had an intense pearl finish. That said, I've recently been having a love affair with brown-based pinks and well, Velvet Beige just had to come home with me. Containing more brown than pink, it's surprisingly wearable with the slight mauve undertone. It's a creamy finish, but it still last up to four hours before I have to reapply. Coffee is fine, but it won't hold up through a meal. I often forget that I'm wearing lipstick when I have this on as it's so light on the lips. There is a strong sweet, almost herbal medicine smell to the lipstick but it fades away quite quickly after application. I'm wearing it in this photo, but it should be noted that I have quite pigmented lips so Velvet Beige looks more pink.
Drugstore beauty was quite frustrating for several months, but there are still some diamonds in the rough. It's always satisfying to find quality products at relatively bargain prices. What have been some of your favourites from the drugstore?
PS. Refresh for the comment section if it doesn't show up the first time around. It seems to be quite temperamental, I have no idea how to fix the issue. If anyone can figure it out and let me know how to fix it, I'll be forever grateful! xx
I love good eyebrows and by that I mean full, bushy brows that make people wonder if you were born with them or if you cheated with makeup. My brows are naturally quite full, with some sparse areas here and there - so it's quite easy for me to make them look overdone. However, I've recently come across two products that not only are easy on the purse, they're also the perfect to getting that low-key drama.
I will always have a soft spot for filling my brows in with powder as it was the first method I used that didn't result in me hating the results. Although my hair colour is on the neutral tottering into the warm spectrum, I like to keep my brows on the ashy side - which unfortunately seems to be a field that the drugstore has yet to master. That is until the Catrice Eyebrow Set came into my life. Complete with two eyebrow shades that are both on the ashy side, it comes with a tweezer and a tiny double sided brush. The brush actually works pretty well, it's thin and firm enough to hold it's shape but soft enough to be flexible. The tweezers on the other hand, let's just say that they require a lot of hand muscle to operate.
I've been having a continuous love affair with the Benefit Gimmie Brow, but the bond we had wasn't strong enough to stop me from wondering if there was anything better out there. I decided to pick up the L'Oreal Brow Artist Plumper (£5.99) and dare I say it, I'm pretty sure I like this one more than the high end offering. The price, the quantity, and most importantly, the stop thingy that removes the excess product from the wand when you pull it out from the tube works a lot better than the offering from Benefit. It does a great job at keeping my bushy brows in place while the fibres add some volume to keep things looking defined but natural. So while I like the tiny wand from Benefit better, but everything else makes me love the drugstore offering more.
I've been indulging in a lot of high end products lately, but this duo has reminded me that you don't need to spend a tonne of money for good products. What are your favourite brow products when you're on a budget?
It's not a secret that I like my bright colours, and I've always embraced them with open arms come the colder months in the past years. This year, I'm finding myself gravitating towards the darker shades and with the temperature dropping, I've started introducing some transitional lipstick shades to pair with my blanket scarves.
Estee Lauder Pure Colour Envy Matte Lipstickin 220 Unattainable (£25): If there's the perfect bright autumnal shade, it would probably be this one. This would be the shade that's easing me into more plumy shades and well, let's just apologise to my already withering bank account in advance. It still has a strong red undertone, which, funnily enough, makes it more within my comfort zone as opposed to something like MAC Plumful - which I still want to try. I've only tried a handful of Estee Lauder lipsticks before but none of them disappointed. Unattainable was no different. A comfortable lipstick that packs a punch of pigment and with a satin finish? So up my alley. Combined with 'white mug safe' non-transferring quality? This might become one of my most favourite lipsticks this season. Oh, did I also mention that it has a magnetic lid as well?
Er..yes, my lips do look parched. They were slightly. I blame it on having the plague cough from hell.
MAC Lipstick in Twig (£15.50): The amount of neutral lipsticks I own is almost pitiful when compared to the army of brights. Twig, a beautiful medium rose pink with a soft brown undertone, is the latest addition to the small family and one that's quickly becoming my most reached for. This is a satin finish, meaning there's a soft dimension that prevents the lipstick from looking too flat upon application but nowhere close to having a sheen. It's staying power is quite good, lasting around 4-5 hours with routine mug action. There is slight transfer, but I find it can be kept to a minimum if you use a tissue to blot the excess oils away when applying the lipstick. It's not a hydrating formula, but it's not drying either. My lips were pretty dehydrated when I took this photo, but it doesn't emphasise the patches as you can see. Lip lines are visible, but nothing a good hydrating lip balm can't solve. All in all, Twig has been my go to pick for when I want a neutral lip option the past several weeks.
I have no posing mojo.
Seventeen Stay Pout Lipstickin Rule Breaker (£4.49): Of course I needed to include a drugstore option. The Seventeen Stay Pout lipsticks are probably one of the most underrated ones from the drugstore. A satin with a slight sheen finish and comfortable to wear, these lipsticks stay put for a good 5-6 hours. Minimal snacking, yes, full on meal, probably not. Transfer occurs, but it's quite even so no awkward colour rings. Rule Breaker is a beautiful deep plum shade with a tint of red. Slightly darker than the other two picks, this one goes on pretty bold with the first layer, so not one that you'd want to try out if you're 'easing into things'. There's no scent to these lipsticks, which seems to be a rarity amongst drugstore options these days. That combined with the satin finish, you really can't get anything similar or better than the Seventeen Stay Pout Lipsticks at this price point.
Lipstick has been my love the past year and it's going to be a continuing love affair as it's probably the easiest way to change up a look. "It's a love story, baby just say yes." What have been your transitional lipsticks this season?
I was never big on highlighting. And then the whole strobing thing happened and while I'm not going all out like the makeup campaigns and runway models, I still enjoy pretending to be a Victoria's Secret Angel going undercover as a normal person. I've decided to be a nice person today and break down (strategically speaking) my small army of highlighters to give you a better idea of what you might be looking for.
the cream option
I'm not usually one for cream anything as I find them to be quite fickle sometimes. But cream options are perfect for layering under your base and resulting in that 'from within' glow. My pick has definitely got to be the Topshop Glow Pot(£9) - it's shimmery but not glittery. It has a creamy, slightly oily texture, but it won't slip and slide throughout the day. I would keep notice that your foundation should be patted, rather than rubbed over this highlighter though, as it will move around.
the budget one
I've talked about this before and it's even made it to a monthly favourites, but the Collection Gorgeous Glow Palette(£3.99) is definitely one that you should keep on your radar if you like a serious highlight. Kicking up quite a bit of product when you tap your brush in it (and I do say tap for a reason), this highlight packs a mean punch when it comes to highlighting. More sheen than glittery, this offering that costs less than lunch is one that's able to compete with higher end offerings.
I was debating on including this one since it was limited edition but if you can still track down the Catrice Pure Shimmer Highlighter than I would strongly encourage you to do so. Unlike the Collection offering that packs a punch, this one is more subtle, but the results are just as beautiful.
the undereye appropriate one
Not usually one for loose powders, the Bourjois Java Rice Loose Powder (£9.99) is an exception that I'm happy to make. Finely milled and with a slight pink undertone, this loose powder does an exceptional job at brightening the under eye area. It does look like it's almost glittery when swatched, but it translates to a light reflecting ability upon application, glitter nowhere in sight. Plus, the stopper device prevents a loose powder cloud forming every time you open the lid. It should be noted that there is a strong rose scent. I'm not the biggest fan, but I can overlook it as it does wear off after a couple minutes.
the 'not quite highlighting but definitely brightening and could technically be used as a highlighter' one
Labelled as a setting powder, the Bobbi Brown Brightening Powder(£42), while outrageously priced, is perfect for finishing your base makeup with a radiant glow. The different coloured powders have the overall effect of correcting the discolouration while the white block adds a beautiful glow. My favourite thing about this? Using a smaller brush, you get to use the different shades to do area colour correcting. Red cheeks peeking out from the concealer? No problem, aim for the green shade. Under eye area still looking a bit dull? Mix the red and the highlighting shade.
the cult favourite
How could this be a highlighter round up without theBalm Mary-Lou Manizer (£17.49)? The fact that I still keep my full-sized shattered Mary-Lou despite having it in two other palettes is the testament to how much I adore this product. A white champagne shade that has unicorn horns mixed in, the finely milled highlight packs a heavenly glow that even angels would sing to. Definitely use a light hand with this one, and by that I mean when you use it and in a 'handle with care' way as it's one that's prone to shattering if not treated with kiddy gloves. However, the high maintenance is worth putting up with as the results are out of this world.
I think it's safe to say that I'm a highlighter convert. Highlighter is something that should be considered a makeup essential in my humble opinion. Even for those that have oiler skin types, properly mattify your base with primer/powder and then you can add some subtle dimension and glow back with a highlighter. Don't mark it off as nonsense just yet. Try it out first. Go on, I know you want to.
Are you a highlight convert? What's your favourite one?
Changes have happened - on the blog and in life. It's been a while since I've updated the internet on what's been going on in my life and now seemed like the right time to do so.
Let's start with the glaringly obvious. Yes, I've completely revamped my blog layout. I've been bored of my previous layout for quite some time but never had the time to deal with it. I've finally had time to properly sit down long enough to tear down the old foundation and reconstruct the layout to one that I'm finally happy with. I'm hoping that the new look will motivate me to up my blogging game even more.
As for what's been going on in my life, as I've mentioned in just about every post in the past 6 weeks, the end of my MSc programme was marked with my dissertation hand-in start of September. It's been a whirlwind of a year and definitely one that's concreted my 'nerd status', as I'm one of those weird people that genuinely enjoyed spending time in the dusty corner of the library, researching and writing my dissertation. So now what? I have the big dream of doing a PhD at one of the world's best academic institutions so the application process isn't going to be a simple feat. Hopefully, the gap between now and then won't be too big as I'm terrified of the world outside the ivory tower.
I've been in London for over two years now and as much as I love the city, it's time to take a break. I'm moving back to Taiwan at the end of the month. So many things have happened while I've been at the heart of the international city. This blog has grown and so have I. I've met people that mean more to me than I ever thought possible, I've fallen in love and I've had my heart broken. I've sort of figured out what I want to do with my life, and I've learned that it is possible to be happy without constantly waiting for the other shoe to fall. It's been an intense two years, and it's definitely going to be weird moving back home after living alone. But I think that I need this change of environment to settle down a bit before I start the next chapter of my life.
So going back, what does this mean for SoaD? For starters, I'm definitely going to continue blogging. I have some posts queued up, hopefully enough till I figure out the blogging photo situation. I'm thinking of expanding SoaD and including more lifestyle posts, and if you guys are interested, maybe touch on some cultural topics (for example: why my mum and a large part of Taiwanese society thinks that red lipstick screams man-eater)? I have some ideas but let me know what you guys think.
Right now, I'm postponing packing and sorting out all the stuff I've accumulated in London. It's quite weird to look at what's essentially been the last two years of my life being packed in boxes, ready to ship half way across the world. I've been trying to spend as much time as I can with friends before it turns into a long-distance friendship with a 7/8 hour time difference.
I don't usually like change, but I surprisingly, haven't been dreading this as much as I thought I would. I think it's just time. It doesn't mean I'm not sad to say goodbye to the people and the city, but I need this change of pace. It's been a good two years and I wouldn't have traded the experience for anything in the world. Thank you, London.
With Love,
Daphne x

(Yeah...the above photo has nothing to do with this post but look at that golden hour sunlight??? Also, I needed an excuse to showcase a face photo that I'm actually happy with.)
For someone that's pretty content with her makeup collection, I've been restlessly expanding my lipstick stash. Most of the newly accumulated lipsticks were quite 'typical' colours, but then I stumbled upon this video from Emily Fox. First of all, this girl can pull of just about any lipstick colour and look amazing. Secondly, I hope this doesn't come off as excessively creepy, but the way she puts on lipstick is mesmerising???? I'm so digging my own grave...
If there's one thing that can always get my attention, it's puns - bad puns, good puns, just puns in general. There's a high chance I'll find it hilarious no matter how bad it is. In the worst case, you'll at least earn an eye roll combined with an exaggerated sigh. Along the note of puns (and not the bad ones) theBalm was a brand that I came to for clever puns but stayed for the quality of the products. I was lucky enough to be invited to the launch of theBalm at Debenhams last month and got a sneak peek at some of the products set to release around Christmas to early next year. Spoiler alert: save up, people. It's going to take a tremendous amount of willpower to reject these launches.
Marking the start of my favourite season, September has been a pretty good month. I handed in my dissertation as I've mentioned 1023 times before, moved flats, explored North London, finally had time to relax and do nothing for the first time in about a year, and simply enjoying the freedom that comes with living alone before I move back home to Taiwan at the end of October. I've been constantly shopping the past month and there's a selected handful of products that have been in constant rotation despite the influx of new beings.
